Organic Brain Disorders in the Aetiology of Schizophrenia

چکیده

During the present century a considerable literature has grown up reporting the association of trauma or illness of the central nervous system with the appearance of an illness closely resembling schizophrenia. However, these reports have been scattered and the possibility that organic trauma of the brain could cause schizophrenia in the absence of a heredity or premorbid personality indicative of this illness has been ignored by most psychiatrists. In 1963 Dr. Eliot Slater and his colleagues published an important paper on the schizophrenia-like psychoses of epilepsy. They found that an illness indistinguishable from schizophrenia was found in epileptic patients and especially in those with temporal lobe epilepsy, with a frequency that was much greater than the expectation based on chance expectation alone* Through the initiative of Dr. Slater, a major review of the literature on the association of schizophrenia-like conditions with all kinds of organic disorders of the centralnervous system, including epilepsy, was undertaken by Davison and Bagley.

Schizophrenia Induces Oxidative Stress and Cytochrome C Release in Isolated Rat Brain Mitochondria: a Possible Pathway for Induction of Apoptosis and Neurodegeneration

Schizophrenia is a chronic and often debilitating illness which affects about 1% of the world population. Some reagents have been used to simulate schizophrenic disorders in laboratory animals, such as amphetamine and ketamine. Previous studies have suggested that reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, reduced levels of ATP, mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis are involved in the pathoph...

Protein-Protein Interaction Analysis of Common Top Genes in Obsessive-Compulsive disorder (OCD) and Schizophrenia: Towards New Drug Approach

Comorbidty is common among psychiatric disorders including obsessive-compulsive disorder and schizophrenia with a high rate. Many studies suggested that the disorders may have same etiological bases. In this regard, shared pathways of glutamate, dopaminergic, and serotonin are the known ones. Here, the common significant genes are examined to understand the possible molecular origin of the diso...

گیرنده های سروتونین - به کجا می روند؟

Thirty-three Years ago, Gaddum and Picarelli classified the serotonin receptors in the guinea pig ileum into D and M types based on the activity of dibenzyline (D) and morphine (M) to block contractions of intestinal smooth muscle caused by serotonin. The subsequent location of specific ligand binding sites for serotonin in the brain has led to the identification of ten serotonin receptor sub-t...
